In this blog, we will discuss the step-by-step method to get rid of coffee stains from upholstery. It’ll help you eliminate the pesky stain and bring back your upholstered fabric’s pristine appearance.
Steps to Remove Coffee Stains from Upholstery
⇒ What You’ll Need
You’ll need the following tools to remove coffee stains from your furniture.
- Microfiber cloths
- White vinegar
- Liquid dish soap
- Water
- Soft-bristled brush
You may also need other cleaning solutions based on the cleaning code on your fabric.
1. Check the Cleaning Code
Check the underside of your furniture and read the cleaning code listed there. The cleaning code plays a huge role in determining which solutions you should use to clean the furniture.
Using the wrong cleaners on the fabric can lead to many long-term issues for your upholstery. Here is a list of the most common upholstery codes and what they indicate.
W- use a water-based cleaning solution
S- use a non-water-based cleaner
W/S- You can use either type of solutions
X- Vacuum only
2. Make the Cleaning Solution
You can use many cleaning solutions to remove coffee stains from upholstery, but liquid dish soap is the easiest. Just mix a tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water. You can also add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the mix.
Baking soda paste is also a good option for coffee stain removal. But it’s not viable for larger areas due to the residue it creates. If the coffee spill is fresh, you can even use cold water.
3. Test for Color Fading
Test whichever solution you are using on a small area of your fabric and look for leeching color. Spray only a small amount of cleaning solutions to prevent damage to a larger area. Avoid using the cleaner if you see signs of discoloration and fading on your upholstered furniture.
4. Blot the Area
If there are no side effects of your preferred cleaning solution, wet a clean cloth in it and blot the stain. Rub the cloth in a clockwise direction. Don’t make the common upholstery cleaning mistake of scrubbing the stain while cleaning upholstery to prevent it from getting deeper into the fabric. Make your way toward the center and repeat the process until the stain lightens.
5. Rinse with Water
Dip another cloth in plain water and blot the area again to remove excess solution. But avoid using the solution in excess to prevent mold growth on your furniture. Repeat till you get all the excess solutions.
6. Dry Completely
Wipe the area with a cloth to clean the excessive moisture from the furniture. Dry the area thoroughly to prevent any future issues. Also, open the windows and turn the fans on to ensure complete drying.
Bottom Line
Homeowners can handle tricky coffee stains with a little proactivity and some homemade cleaners. But while cleaning the stain, it’s best to read the cleaning code beforehand and test out any cleaners before use to protect your upholstery from any long-term damage.
